The Faculty of Psychology at the University of Vienna comprises, beside the Dean’s office and the StudyServiceCenter, four Departments as well as the Psychological Outpatient Unit.


The Differential Psychology and Psychological Assessment Unit (Head: Ass.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Jakob Pietschnig) is a part of the Department of Developmental and Educational Psychology.

Your personal sphere of influence:

As a university assistant predoc, you will complement the research team. Research topics of the Unit focus particularly on
(i) cognitive abilities, their bases, correlates, and (intra- and interindividual) changes over time,
(ii) the development, application, and evaluation of psychological test, as well as
(iii) the validity of empirical study effects.



Our methodological approaches include quantitative analyses of cross-sectional and longitudinal data, research syntheses-based approaches (especially meta-analyses), as well as IRT-based methods. We offer excellent work opportunities that are expected to lead to the completion of a doctorate, a motivated and experienced team, as well as international collaborations and intensive promotion of young scientists.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • You participate in research projects / research studies.
  • You design and conduct empirical studies.
  • You publish research results in international scientific journals.
  • You participate in publications / academic articles / presentations.
  • You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
  • You are involved in the organization of and participate actively in meetings, conferences, and symposiums.
  • You supervise students.
  • We expect you to complete your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.

This is part of your personality:

  • Completed Master’s degree or Diploma in the field psychology.
  • Strong research interests in the field of differential psychology and psychological assessment, especially in the research focus of the unit.
  • Experience in planning, conducting, and statistical analysis of empirical studies.
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical data analysis programs (desired: SPSS, R) and willingness to further the own expertise.
  • Good knowledge of quantitative analysis methods and motivation for extending this knowledge.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken German and English.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • High commitment, personal initiative, and independence.
  • Motivation for participating in academic teaching.

Desirable qualifications are:

  • Initial teaching experience.
  • Initial experiences with publishing in discipline-specific international scientific journals.
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures.
  • Experience abroad.

What we offer:

  • Teaching experience in bachelor’s and master’s curriculum.
  • Attendance of the Vienna Doctoral School in Cognition, Behaviour and Neuroscience (VDS CoBeNe).

The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.

Fair salary: The basic salary (full time) according to the classification of the collective bargaining agreement in the B1 salary group amounts to EUR 3.578,80. This amount increases after three years of service. The three-year period shall be reduced by periods for which previous job-related work experience can be proved (see Salary scheme).
