I took an old mans dream, and attempted to turn it into reality. His idea of a lightweight, but high power diesel aircraft engine, combining the proven design of horizontally opposed pistons and two wobble plates which convert linear motion into rotary motion, was both interesting and challenging. I produced 3D models in Pro/ Engineer, and reviewed different materials, heat treatments, manufacturing methods and plating processes, performing stress analysis on major parts to try and produce a design that was both lightweight and strong. Severl other design issues had to be overcome, such as cooling the cast iron cylinder sleeves sufficiently that the aluminium casing didn't become plastic with the intense heat, or ensuring that there was sufficient air flow, lubrication and exhaust.
I also reviewed various designs for producing an extremely responsive, high revving, lightweight and small frontal profile engine for airships.
